First and foremost Knights Chess Academy would like to thank Engines Chess Club (Harare based) for sponsoring our monthly Scholars Open Tournament Feb 2015. We used a prize fund of $150 and saved $70 for the March 2015 tournament. Feb 2015 1st prize $40 went to Zhemba Jemusse 5/5, 2nd place prize $15 each Tapiwa Chikwavaire and Vincent Mabodongwa 4/5, 4th place prize $9 Collins Mabodongwa…and overall prizes went up to 10th place. In addition 6 special prizes, Best Lady, Youngest Player, Best U8, Best U10, Best U12, Consolation were given to the jubilant youngsters…Thanks once again ENGINES CHESS CLUB!!!
The tournament venue was again Cabal Christian College (Gazaland area) in Highfield Harare. Special thanks goes to the Principal Mr Juta for providing us with a free venue.
This time it was a 5 round event with top seeds Zhemba Jemusse (18), Tapiwa Chikwavaire (17), Vincent Mabodongwa (16) and young brother Collins Mabodongwa (12) fighting for top honours. Also the 1st place prize doubled to $40 as compared to last Jan 2015 tournament’s $20. The additional prizes as compared to Jan 2015’s few prizes gave the youth tournament some spark.
1st: Zhemba Jemusse 5/5 got $40, 2nd (tie) Tapiwa Chikwavaire and Vincent Mabodongwa 4/5 $15 each, 4th Collins Mabodongwa 3.5/5 $9, 5th (5 players shared) Latricia Sibanda (11), Samantha Mapepa (13), Panashe Edward (11), Irvin Makuvise (15) and Blessing Moyo (17) at 3/5 all got $6 each, 10th was Lesley Chikomo (15) 2.5/5 got $3.
There were plenty special prizes as well this time. Best Lady were Latricia Sibanda and Samantha Mapepa 3/5 got $4 each. Youngest player was John Jnr Chibvuri (6) 2/5 got $5. Best U8 Dylan Chapwanya (7) $5. Best U10 Tinodaishe Jena (10) $5, Best U12 Amarah Chikumbirike (12) $5, Consolation Prizes Makanaka Munyawarara (11), Elvin Sibanda (15) and Desire Chibete (17) all got $3 each.
Schools represented at this Feb 2015 tournament were: Kundayi Pri., Manyame Airbase Pri., Zuvarabuda Pri., Shiriyedenga Pri., Kwayedza High, Highfield 2 High, Mt Camel College, Herentals College, Cabal Christian College, Budiriro 1 High, Glen View 2 High, Glen View 1 High.

I am so proud of my nation supporting this game but as a student of Bernard Mizeki college I have seen some great players natured there but tournament invitations have not reached us …..at all
