Splendid….That’s the word that can best describe the performance of the very young Knights or ‘chess vipers’ on Saturday the 13th of June 2015 in the quiet suburb of Zimre Park Ruwa. The youth chess culture in Zimbabwe is surely becoming alive each and every weekend! Windview Primary School hosted a very successful debut tournament. The turnout was quite good considering its a first time chess jamboree at this Zimre Park based junior school. Other Schools came as far as Gokwe and Kwekwe! The newest School of Chess in Zimbabwe Willenita from Kwekwe had 18 players.
Thanks to the founder Mr Willfred Sithole who is doing a good job. The Senior Section (U14) had 113 participants and the Junior Section (U10) had 33 players. The school located at Stand 6053 Mango Drive Zimre Park Ruwa hosted a memorable event. As usual our Knights Chess Academy Zimbabwe very young players or ‘toddlers’ didn’t disappoint at all. 7 year old Salome Hwata had 4/5, and came joint 1st (Gold Medal) in the U9 age group as well as joint 2nd overally out of 33 players in the Junior U10 section. 6 year old Tinaye Madamombe sat on 4/5 also, joint 1st in age group U9, and again joint 2nd overally in the Junior Section. There were 5 players on 4/5 and 1 player Sean from Chifurudzi Primary with 5/5 in the junior section. Salome doing grade 2 at Gateway Primary, Tinaye grade 1 at Waterfalls Gardens did extremely well considering they were wrestling with more experienced Grade 5 and Grade 4 players in that section.
The private home sessions with Knights Chess Academy Zimbabwe are really becoming valuable in aiding their chess skills development. Other students Tawananyasha Mawire grade 1 at Avondale Primary and John Chibvuri Jnr also grade 1 did well with 3/5 and sat on joint 4th overally. The Senior Section was jointly won by the chess wondergirl Refiloe Mudodo, Clive Kofi and Clever Gambe all at 5/5. Knights Chess Academy Zimbabwe student Panashe Edward grade 6 at Shiriyedenga Primary in Glen Norah Harare sat jointly on 2nd place (4/5) with others. Meanwhile ALL ROADS LEAD TO GOKOMERE CHESS FESTIVAL 2015 in Masvingo this Saturday 20th June 2015…See you there!
