Spencer ‘Spoon’ Masango wins The Chitungwiza Open 2016…!

Spencer ‘Spoon’ Masango wins The Chitungwiza Open 2016…! It was a FIDE rated event held on Saturday the 8th and Sunday 9th of October. Venue was The Vintage Mall Hall, Makoni Chitungwiza. Spencer a National Team Player who recently took part in The Baku Chess Olympiad early in September had a fine predatory run in The Open Section as he mercilessly buried his opponents from the first round to the 6th round only having a truce with fellow National Team player Elisha Chimbamu in the last 7th round. Spencer had an incredible 6.5/7 in a field of tough chess players like The current Zimbabwe National Champ Dion Moyo, Elisha Thabo, Elisha Chimbamu, Zhemba Jemusse to mention but a few.

Zhemba Jemusse was second with 5.5pnts proving that he is now a force to reckon with in the Zim Chess circles. Zhemba lost to the fast improving Terrence Mukoviya in the 2nd round and drew with Mugove Muririma in the 6th round. Also at 5.5 were: Elisha Chimbamu, as well as the greatly improved Mugove Muririma who clobbered Dion Moyo the current Zim National Champ in the last round causing some serious catastrophic almost fist fighting scenes (thanks to the ‘wise waters’ taken earlier by Dion the International Arbiter Mr Simba Murimi was also caught in the crossfire), and Tapiwa Jele was among the 5.5pnt players. Meaning the 4 were joint 2nd…well done guys!

Here is the 1982 born and 2189 rated Spenser’s predatory instinct run: He beat the following in that order; Kawadza Ephraim, Hamandishe Jemitias, Chayamiti Vasco, Thabo Elisha 1947, Mapuranga Vitalis, Moyo Dion 2072 and finally drew Chimbamu Elisha 2134. In the Open Section 50 players took part in this event.

And in the U14 Junior Section Tinashe Chimhanga won the event (though the boy is over aged!). John Chibvuri Jnr (7) who had a very fine run of 4/7 beating some Zim Youth National Team players in this section had to face this 16 or 17 year old boy in the last rounds on top boards and lost. After this brave effort the young boy could not even get an U8 prize (as previously advertised) consequently demoralizing the rising young star. Hope in future Organizers shall look into this and listen to other people’s complains about over aged players like Tinashe!…after all fairness and motivating youngsters is always a noble thing. The Chitungwiza Open 2016 was organized by Harare Chess Association in partnership with The Zimbabwe Chess Foundation.
