GNKCA is a community organisation with a goal of identifying, nurturing and developing chess talent of youngsters especially the disadvantaged ghetto youths. The Academy is mostly driven by passion as chess in most ghetto areas like Glen Norah is viewed as a luxury sport by school heads and parents. Chess unlike soccer is not a spectator sport thus attracting sponsors is like finding a needle in hay sticks.
GNKCA since its formation in January 2011 has produced very talented youth national team material ghetto youngsters like Collins Mabodongwa (11), Takesure Madzongwe (11), Kudzai Mhandu (12), Alpha Chaendera (14), Shaun Chigogora (14) as well as the “Incredible Hulk” Zhemba Jemusse now 17. All these youngsters above have never played in both Africa Youth and World Youth Chess Championships which are important top events to show case their talent.
GNKCA has plans in place to be on national television and in the press regularly with the aim of publicising its talented products thus hoping to attract the attention of reliable sponsors. After all they say victory is born of struggle! Not all ghetto kids are talented in soccer. cricket, rugby, atheletics etc but some are very talented in the strategic mind game.
GNKCA is currently having a programme called “Chess in the Streets” in the Glen Norah community. Its aim is to identify some more talented youths as well as bringing awareness to the people of Glen Norah that they have incredible talented youths as young as 5 year olds who can checkmate them! One amazing 5 year old kid “Jay Jay” is doing wonders with his exciting play filled with a fine display of chess basics mastering at his tender age.
