Meanwhile in Mansa Zambia Zim’s CM Dion Moyo (middle with his friends from Zim’s next door country) was on fire at another top event in the Open Section. Which means there were two major chess events running at the same time in Zambia, one in Livingstone and another in Mansa held Feb end…Zimbabwe chess players took part in both. Dion Moyo, Spencer Masango in Mansa; Tapiwa Chikwavaire, Zhemba Jemusse, Lawrence Tavagwisa in Livingstone..they played their best facing their tough neighbours..!
After the Mansa event it was all smiles and congrats messages for Dion….
Well done CM Dion James Moyo (middle in pic) for winning the Mukubulo tournament OPEN SECTION jointly with other Zambians in Mansa Zambia…!!
Zimbabwean Dion James Moyo (2074) won (jointly) the tournament with 7/8!! He had a perfect score after 6 rounds and went on to draw with Zambia’s National Champ International Master Andrew Kayonde (2411) in the 7th round. According to those who watched the game….Dion opted for the Kings Indian Defense which later transposed to the Pirc after e4.
It was a closed ending ,both players with two Bishops and a Knight .Kayonde with the space and the tricks. Dion with the time and resistance . He just needed to set up a draw and he did just that against Zambia’s best chess player.
In the last round he settled for a truce again facing Zambia’s Humphrey Luambula (1909) and came 1st jointly. Dion and 4 Zambian players (Titus Mulenga, Godwin Phiri, Humphrey Luambula, Frank Mpundu) had 7pts. Thanks to his scintillating show!
Spencer Masango (2062) also drew in the last round to finish at 6/8 on position 18 (or joint 8th-as there were 13 players with 6pts).
IM Andrew Kayonde lost his last round game vs his fellow country man Titus Mulenga (1962) and finished at 6pts on 17th place (or joint 8th-as there were 13 players with 6pts).
