2021 AICC MALAWI Round 8 Update
By Khisho in Malawi
The Pharaohs disarm rebellious masters!!
The 8th round was another thrilller. Two serious masters showed up to challenge the Egyptian grandmasters (Bassem and Adly )on the top boards.
On the first board,
putting on a black leather jacket and black “Clint Eastwood” like hat, IM Gillian Bwalya of Zambia looked like a mafia hitman despatched to assassinate the King of Africa chess.
While on the second board, in mohawk hair cut, Angolan IM David Silva looked like he was on an assignment of some rebel group of East Africa.
Using the King’s Indian and Sicilian defence shields respectively, the two IMs put a decent account of themselves against the ruthless Egyptian grandmasters, taking the grandmasters into long grueling strategic games that required total concentration.
“Perhaps even angels stood up to watch these games”_commented one guy.
However, they both collapsed at the end. Bwalya largely due to time pressure and Silva due to a simple endgame miss, otherwise they were both drawish games.
In other mouth watering games
IM Fy Rakotomaharo, who was playing his fifth GM in a roll, lost to GM Bilel Bellahcene, GM Hesham Abdelrahman beat FM Joseph Mwale, GM Fawzy Adham
beat FM Daniel Barish, FM Patrick Kawuna shared the spoils with FM Banele Mhango.
As it stands, the 2 Egyptian gladiators still lead with 7 points a piece. They are closely followed by another Egyptian GM Fawzy Adham on 6.5 points.
As usual, there were also blasts in the ladies section. But WIM Jesse February’s win over WFM Lorita Mwango definitely changes the destiny of the section.
In other critical games, Priyasha Santosh of Malawi drew with WIM Nassr Lina of Algeria while
WIM Moaataz Ayah beat Nakabo Peninah of Uganda.
As it stands Jesse February leads the group with 6.5 points. She is closely followed by WIM Nassir Lina and WIM Moaataz Ayah of Algeria at 6 points.
