Malawian Mwale drops serious bomb on Grandmaster Bilel Bellahcene….as Lorita takes first sole lead of ladies section
The 6th round saw a very serious bomb dropped by Malawi’s chess hero FM Joseph Mwale on Grandmaster Bilel Bellahcene of Algeria to set the whole tournament ablaze.
From the on set , we knew the board one “civil war” strife between Egyptians GM Adly and GM Bassem will end in a draw, but what was much talked about was the game between GM Fawzy Adham (Egypt) and IM Fy Rakotomaharo (Madagascar).
It was a known fact that, in this game, Fy was not only taking on Fawzy, but was also indirectly taking on GM Adly and GM Bassem.
It was rumoured, the 2 Egyptian masters had spent hours in Fawzy’s room , arming him with very powerful ammunition to eliminate Fy from Madagascar who is a known threat to their championship ambitions.
But when people were busy with this game, boom! a bomb exploded on board 3. The Malawian chess general ‘The Fear’ FM Joseph Mwale was doing the unthinkable on grandmaster Bilel Bellahcene from Algeria. As the game reached the endgame, it looked like the case of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Fear brutally killing the young grandmaster to give warning to the senior grandmasters in the tournament.
“The smoke of this bomb can be seen from the skies of Zambia ..what’s happening in Malawi?”, commented one Zambian.
There were also scores of congratulatory messages for Joseph Mwale.
“The president must declare a national holiday” commented one man.
Other notable individuals that sent him congratulatory messages include Russian based Malawian ‘GM Software’, Susan Namangale and Stanley Kenani.
However, the postmortem shows the grandmaster made 2 errors .First one being: Frequently getting away from the board to walk around after playing his move _ You don’t do that against GM Fear. Any game against FM Joseph Mwale “The Fear” should be treated as an exam.
The second one was probably the bad exchange sacrifice he played in the middle game.
So when Joseph won, and when the top 2 boards drew their games, it ushered Joseph into the tournament leaders league with 5 points.
So it’s GM Adly, GM Bassem, IM Rakotomaharo, and FM Joseph Mwale leading the tournament with 5 points.
In other mouthwatering encounters, FM Patrick Kawuma of Uganda beat IM Chitumbo Mwali of Zambia, and FM Banele Mhango (SA) beat FM Abdulraheem Abdulrahman Akintoye of Nigeria.
In the ladies category, Zambian Lorita Mwango has taken the first sole lead of the section with 5 points. She is closely followed by Nassr Lina (Algeria), Jesse February (SA) and Kudzanayi Charinda (Zimbabwe) at 4.5 points.
Lorita beat Nigerian WFM Ogbiyoyo Perpetual Eloho with white pieces.
In other tough games of the ladies section, WIM Jesse February (SA) beat Egyptian WGM Wafa Shahenda, and WCM Kudzanayi Charinda (Zimbabwe) drew WIM Nassr Lina (Algeria).
