Top seeds drop devastating bombs
Who said that the bombings are over?
As the quest for African honours reaches a carthasis, the fourth round saw the top Egyptian masters drop devastating bombs on their opponents positions.
GM Adly Ahmed dropped his “Catalan” bomb , which is reserved for Supergrandmasters, against Zambia’s IM Gillian Bwalya to secure a full point, while GM Amin Bassem dropped his French defence bomb against Namibian IM Dante Beuke’s “e4” opening.
In both games, the grandmasters pushed their pieces mercilessly. GM Adly played a brilliant game spiced with very deep sacrifices, while GM Bassem cut Dante’s jugular by penetrating his rook into his 8th rank.
At the end of the day, they both seemed to say “Nobody can question us about these cruel bombs, these boys are keeping weapons of mass destruction. So no mercy”.
Meanwhile, it’s only the Madagascan IM Antenaina Rakotomaharo and GM Adly Ahmed who remain spotless with a maximum 4 points.
Following closely, with 3.5 points, are South African wonder boy, FM Banele Mhango and GM Amin Bassem.
In other mouthwatering games, terror Ugandan IM Patrick Kawuma held GM Bilel Bellahcene to a draw, while in the South Africa derby, FM Banele Mhango beat FM Daniel Barish.
In the Ladies section, the much dreaded fixtures: WIM Moataz Ayah vs WFM Lorita Mwango and WGM Wafa Shahenda vs WIM Nassr Lina on board one and 2 respectively, ended in draws .
But Nigerian WFM Ogbiyoyo Perpetual Eloho beat South African ladies champion WIM Jesse February.
WIM Moataz Aya and WFM Lorita Mwango lead the ladies section with 3.5 points.
Today (Sat 22 May), they are on break, but when they come back tomorrow the hot fixtures in Open Section are
