Tournament reports first grandmaster ‘death’..
On the third day, after the players mounted on their boards, it quickly became clear that the grandmasters were in for a rude awakening.
Through out the game, (Namibian) IM Dante Beukes was trying his best to press the missile button against (Algerian) GM Bilel Bellahcene. But perhaps prayers of innocent people that would have suffered from the effects of the untested missile were restraining him, while Ugandan IM Patrick Kawuma literally rolled on the ground in the Sicilian with (Egyptian) GM Amin Bassem on board 1; and it’s wasn’t really clear who was on top of the other most of the times.
And on the second board, (Egyptian) GM Adly Ahmed was trying his best to teach (South African) FM Daniel Barrish a severe Benko gambit lesson (well just to give a picture of how things looked like in the playing hall)..
But as people were concentrating on these games, suddenly we heard “Boooom!” on one of the arriere boards_ and we saw the whole GM Hesham Abdelrahman fall prostrate like Goliath. Knowing GM Hesham, people thought it was a joke _also considering that the GM was only playing a boy rated just over 2100.
When the arbiters followed up, the GM was pronounced ‘dead’. ‘Killed’ by the boy from (SA) Mpumalanga, FM Banele Mhango. However, cause of ‘death’ is yet to be established.
In the end, GM Bellahcene and GM Bassem drew their games in white pieces, while GM Adly ground a win against FM Barish with black pieces.
There were more upsets. The hope of the nation Prince Daniel Mulenga (2246) lost to Malawian Ronald Chinkute(1955), (Zambian) IM Andrew Kayonde(2399) lost to the Nigerian guy Oragwu Chukunonso(2241), IM Karim Wageith (2425) lost to Algerian Naasir Ali (2225)
