….A huge congratulations to GM Adly Ahmed who picks up the final round victory to confirm himself the best player on the continent for the year 2019 with Egypt claiming the top 3 spots and prizes at the event, showing that they remain the nation to beat on the continent!
…..It was a huge final day at the championship and this was seen in the games that was played, as pressure got to some and some were able to overcome the pressure to gain important victories on the day.
….Unfazed GM Adly Ahmed (in pic); Board 1 saw GM Adly Ahmed claim a victory that IM Makoto (ZIM) would have felt hard done by, after playing the opening so well and getting a positional advantage in the middle game that should have been enough to build a win on, only to see a quick mirage and make a self destructive move in 28. Bg7? and continue with an even worse 29.Kxf7?? which inadvertently gave GM Adly the gold in a few moves on a platter with a whopping 8/9 points.
….One of the best performing players at the championship, IM Fy Rakotomaharo, was firm on the final day to ensure that defending champion GM Bassem would not end the tournament victorious at his expense. He held him for an important draw, which sees the Egyptian qualify for the Chess World Cup in Russia come September, with a final 7/9 points.
….On board 3, it was the veteran Egyptian GM El Gindy Essam that stood tall at the end of the day, against the tired Algerian young Grandmaster Bellahcene Bilel, to secure his qualification for the Chess World Cup with a third place finish, secured with this win and GM Adly’s zonal qualification.
…In a rematch from last year’s match in Côte d’Ivoire, IM Andrew Kayonde dealt a huge blow to GM Solomon Kenny to climb up in the standings ahead of the South African with an important victory, which ensured that despite his two (2) losses at the event, the Zambian gained some 3.6 ELO rating at the end of the tournament.
…The biggest rating gainer at the championship is CM Kibrom Weldegebriel Beraki of Eritrea, who gained 78.8 ELO rating at the end of the tournament with three (3) massive wins..
… And the biggest rating loss at the end of the tournament is Nigeria’s Abdulrahman Abdulraheem Akintoye who lost 40.8 ELO rating points.
WOMEN’S SECTION
….Doing a Carlsen in the female section, even after winning the female section of the #AICC2019 with a round to spare, WGM Wafa Shrook went on to claim a final round victory over Zambia’s WFM Mwango Lorita in spectacular fashion to finish the tournament with a massive 8.5/9!

…It was a routing for the Egyptians on the final day, as they claimed the scalp of all their respective opponents in this section to put themselves in contention for major honors at the end of the championship.
…WGM Wafa Shahenda made up for her earlier misses with a crushing victory over WIM Latreche Sabrina, which gave hope to the other Egyptian ladies to catch up, and one which they capitalized on to great effect.
…WIM Moaataz Ayah secured a tactical victory over WIM Mezioud Amina with some brilliant showing on the final day. While WIM Elansary Eman also secured victory by an unprecedented checkmate in an attack filled game against WFM Marzouk Amira of Tunisia.
…The biggest gainer of this section is WFM Miladi Amen of Tunisia, who would be amassing a total of 60 ELO rating points.
…And the biggest loser in the section is Nigeria’s Ibrahim Aishat, who lost 88.4 ELO rating points at the end of the championship.
